Everett R. Cook Diary

Abstract

This collection consists of the typed diary of Everett R. Cook in which he discusses his service as a pilot in the Officers' Signal Reserve Corps and with the 91st Aero Squadron on the Western Front during World War I. He begins by describing his trip overseas and goes on to chronicle his unit's movements, camp life, and some of his flights. The diary ends when Cook is discharged and begins his trip home.

Abstract This collection houses a variety of papers documenting 1st Lieutenant Francis T. Boyd's service with the 116th Mobile Ordnance Repair Shop (41st Division) during World War I. This unit was stationed in Illinois, New York, and several locations in France. George Whittington Correspondence

Abstract

This collection consists of an envelope and four pages of correspondence, written by George Whittington, from Base hospital #7 in France to Eddie A. Snow of Boston, Massachusetts. The letter was written on Armistice Day, November 11, 1918 and is on American Expeditionary Force letterhead.

Hyman Levison Collection

Lester Randolph Collection

Overview

This collection consists of letters, regiment announcements, and newspapers. The letters are written by Sergeant Lester Randolph, a member of the 23rd Regiment of Engineers, to a woman in Knoxville named Charlotte during World War I. Most of Randolph's letters were written while in France and most include the original envelopes with the censorship stamps and postmarks. There is one letter from Mexico dated 1921 to show proof of Lester’s survival of the war.

This collection documents the life and work of Mary de Garmo. Included are correspondence, newspaper clippings, speeches, transcripts of radio broadcasts, and other papers largely focused on de Garmo’s work with civic and philanthropic organizations. These organizations include the Department of Good Roads for Child Welfare, the Better Babies program, the Louisiana Mothers' Congress, the National Society of 1917 World War Registrars, and the National Society of U. S. Daughters of 1812.

Navy Department "Eyes for the Navy" Correspondence

Abstract

This collection consists of a memo from the Navy Department asking citizens to donate binoculars, telescopes and spy-glasses for the war effort, a part of the "Eyes for the Navy" campaign. Also included is a check made out to Eleanor F. Buffat and a signed letter from Franklin Delano Roosevelt, then the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, thanking her for her war-time contribution.

Rose Harwood Letters

Abstract Lieutenant George Harold Byrd and Lieutenant George S. Fox Jr. wrote the bulk of these letters to Rose Harwood in Trenton, Tennessee and later at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia during World War I. Both men intended to marry Harwood upon returning to the United States. Byrd served with the 327th Infantry, 82nd Division in France and was killed by an artillery shell in the Argonne Forest on October 11, 1918.
